The National Adoption Center

Behind the Wednesday's Child Website

The National Adoption Center (NAC) created and maintains the national Wednesday's Child website, in partnership with the Freddie Mac Corporation.

The National Adoption Center's mission is to expand adoption opportunities for children throughout the United States, particularly for children with special needs and those from minority cultures. Since 1972, the Center has assisted in locating families for over 20,000 children.

A non-profit organization, the Center receives funding from foundations, corporations, and government grants as well as from individual contributions and fund-raisers. Funding for the Wednesday's Child Website is provided by the Freddie Mac Foundation.

Helping Families Adopt

Families can visit the Center's website for comprehensive information on How to Adopt, a Resource Library of articles and links, a Learning Center with an online course in family preparation, and a guide to adoption benefits for employees through the Center's Adoption Friendly Workplace program.

Families may request an information packet to help them get started in adoption by filling out an online interest form on any of the Center's websites, sending an email to nac@adopt.org, or calling the Center toll free at 1-800-TO-ADOPT.

Families may view and inquire about waiting children shown on the Center's Wednesday's Child and Adoption Center of Delaware Valley websites. Unstudied families who live in Delaware, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania can get assistance in locating an agency from the Center's Adoption Center of Delaware Valley.

The National Adoption Center is not an adoption agency. It does not approve families for adoption or place children with families.

Adoption Advocacy, Awareness and Media

Advocating for U.S. children who wait to be adopted is at the core of the Center's mission. The Center works collaboratively with many national adoption and child welfare organizations. It is a founding member of Voice for Adoption, a group that provides a strong voice to legislators and media, educating them about adoption issues.

To raise public awareness about the children in the U.S. who are waiting to be adopted, the Center works extensively with members of print, electronic, and online media, who seek the Center's expertise on numerous adoption topics. Included are Good Morning America, National Public Radio, 60 Minutes, 48 Hours, CNN, Essence, Redbook, Parade, Savoy, USA Today and Women's World.
